LAPD CRASH DATA
How prevalent and dangerous are car accidents in Los Angeles? A look at data from the Los Angeles Police Department gives us a better view of the bigger picture in 2019.
According to 2019 LAPD crash data:
- There were nearly 54,000 traffic collisions, which is almost 150 crashes a day.
- Out of all of those crashes, 236 fatalities were reported.
The data sends some mixed information when similar crash reports from previous years are examined. According to the LAPD, almost 55,000 vehicle crashes occurred in 2018, so that number dropped slightly. Yet the number of fatalities stayed virtually the same, with 234 reported in 2018.
Also, when looking at accident data dating back to 2014, the total number of traffic-related fatalities has spiked by nearly 33%. Pedestrian deaths account for most of that increase. However, the LAPD data shows that about 50% of those pedestrian accidents occurred away from crosswalks, which suggests the pedestrian may have been partially at-fault due to jaywalking.
Lastly, it is important to note that practically half of all traffic accidents in Los Angeles County in 2019 were hit-and-run accidents in which a driver leaves the scene before they can be identified. Hit-and-run accidents put liable parties in an extremely difficult and unfair situation that does not provide any promise that they can be compensated for their injuries. It is highly suggested that all L.A. drivers purchase uninsured motorist insurance coverage that can provide some damages if they are ever hurt in a hit-and-run collision.
