In the early hours of June 1, reports began circulating through Los Angeles about a machete attack near South Grand Avenue and 11th Street. After assaulting his first victim, the attacker moved to Broadway Street and Olympic Boulevard, where he attacked chef Kyle Levitt on his way home from work.
While the first of the attacker’s victims succumbed to his injuries, Levitt received the medical support he needed to treat his severe head wounds and nearly-severed hand. Now, Omega Law Group Accident & Injury Attorneys intends to pursue a civil case in his name.
Representation from an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer makes it easier for victims like Levitt to secure the damages they need to pay for their medical bills and supplement lost income.
Omega Law Group hopes that its efforts, in tandem with the criminal case brought against the attacker, will help Levitt recover.
Two Attacks Shake Los Angeles Communities
Kyle Levitt was not the first person to face an attack in the morning hours of June 1. Witnesses reported that someone with a machete attacked a man in his 60s near 11th Street and South Grand Avenue before crossing paths with Levitt. Unfortunately, the injuries this first victim sustained were fatal. He died in doctors’ care after being rushed to the hospital.
Kyle Levitt, who was on his way home from work at an L.A. restaurant, noticed the armed assailant running at him and did what he could to fend him off.
“I put my arms up to say stop,” he says in a report issued by KTLA5, “and that’s when he hit me again.”
Kyle Levitt Reports on His Attacker
The injuries Levitt sustained nearly severed his hand from his right arm. He also sustained multiple injuries to the head.
“My tendons were cut completely down to the bone. My artery was cut, and he was over me at this point and that is the first time that I’d seen that he had the knife in his hand,” he said.
He reports that his attacker, now identified as Caleb Daniels, never spoke to him nor expressed any intent behind his actions. Instead, Levitt describes Daniels’ “crazy eyes” and reports that after several blows, Daniels “sort of stopped in that moment and registered, for whatever reason, that it was over and he ran away.”
Levitt’s Road to Recovery
In a report issued to CBS News, Levitt says that he believes he was struck at least four times, at which point he fell to the ground. Despite the severity of his injuries, he was able to get a neighbor’s attention immediately after the attack, at which point he was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Since the attack, Levitt has undergone numerous surgeries to preserve his hand and address the injuries to his head. Medical professionals report that he will need additional care as well as physical therapy if he wants to fully recover.
KTLA5 reports that he and his loved ones have opened a GoFundMe to help him pay for his ongoing care.
Arresting Caleb Daniels
The police officers who responded to calls about Levitt’s attack relied on witness statements to identify Caleb Daniels as Levitt’s attacker. Officers discovered a large butcher knife in Daniels’ possession upon his arrest. They believe witnesses mistook the weapon for a machete during and after Daniels’ attacks.
Levitt holds considerable grace for Daniels, stating, “I can say I don’t hold it against him. Obviously, I wish it didn’t happen to either myself or the man who unfortunately passed away.”
Even so, he hopes that Los Angeles’s criminal and civil courts will hold Daniels accountable for the impact his violent outburst had on Levitt’s life as well as that of his other victim.
This is not Daniels’s first time facing arrest. According to CBS, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office dismissed a case against him in March 2024, at which point he was accused of criminal threat. He’s now in police custody and scheduled to appear in court on July 3.
Omega Law Group Is Proud to Pursue Civil Justice on Levitt’s Behalf
As a chef, Levitt needs his hands and his health to continue working. Daniels’ attack has left him without the means to do his everyday job, compromising his income as well as his physical well-being. It’s with that financial impact in mind that the Los Angeles personal injury lawyers with Omega Law Group intend to bring a civil case against Daniels.
This civil case, in contrast to a prosecutor’s criminal case, will demand financial damages based on the medical bills and lost income Levitt has endured as a result of Daniels’ actions.
