California’s roads can be deadly: during 2024, NHTSA data tells us that the state recorded 3,876 fatalities from 3,583 fatal crashes (1.08 deaths per crash). And three causes are behind the vast majority of road deaths: speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving.
This study from Omega Law Group breaks down the data behind the leading causes of California’s traffic deaths. It also uncovers California’s deadliest driving windows, the counties that feature the highest car accident fatality figures, and the driver age groups suffering the highest number of fatalities.
First, let’s take a broader measure of California’s fatal crash problem.
The Toll of California’s Highways
In 2024, California’s 3,583 fatal crashes involved 5,390 vehicles: roughly 1.5 vehicles per crash. That ratio clearly confirms that many fatal collisions involved multiple vehicles, and suggests a significant number of high-impact scenarios like head-on crashes and vehicle pileups (as opposed to solely single-car incidents).
Throughout the year in question, California suffered an average of 9.8 fatal crashes and 10.6 traffic deaths every day.
Monthly data reveals a strong seasonal pattern that’s consistent with the nationally recognized ‘100 deadliest days’ period between (and including) Memorial Day and Labor Day. During that window, a higher number of young drivers on the road for summer break, holiday-related impaired drivers, and higher traffic volumes lead to a spike in fatality numbers.
February represents California’s quiet period when it comes to fatal crashes, with reduced travel and inclement weather typically keeping people off state roads. Beyond February, crash counts rise through spring and summer before peaking in August and September.
In 2024, September was subject to the year’s highest crash count (332) and highest death toll (357). Between July and September, the 969 fatal crashes recorded represent nearly 17% more crashes than during the year’s opening quarter (830).
However, the most dangerous months in terms of crash volume were not necessarily the most severe months per individual crash. June featured the highest deaths-to-crashes ratio (1.12 fatalities per crash), while May featured the highest vehicles-per-crash ratio (1.59).
Both lagged behind August and September in terms of total volume, suggesting that late summer’s danger is partly due to high travel volume; disproportionately catastrophic early-summer crashes may reflect graduation travel, increased motorcycle and recreational vehicle activity, and riskier driving as good weather first arrives.
The drop in crash numbers after September was relatively modest, with October, November, and December recording respective crash numbers of 318, 321, and 300: well above February’s low of 264. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas/New Year’s travel may in part explain why fatal crash activity remains elevated during the fall and winter.
The data suggests that road danger is not just a summer phenomenon and underscores the risks involved with holiday travel at all times of the year.
Overall, the data reinforces the fact that California’s traffic deaths are not random. Instead, they’re subject to predictable seasonal and behavioral patterns and factors. And some of those key factors include speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving, all of which are especially consequential during both summer and holiday travel periods.
The Main Causes of Vehicle Fatalities in California
Alcohol impairment and speeding are California’s two biggest causes of traffic fatalities. In 2024, according to NHTSA figures, drunk driving killed 1,311 people across the state, making it the largest single contributing factor to fatal crashes (and the second-highest drunk driving death toll of any state, behind Texas).
Speeding was a factor in 1,139 road deaths. These numbers reflect both high-speed freeway crashes and everyday speeding on streets and residential roads.
Of the 3,876 traffic fatalities on California’s roads in 2024, alcohol impairment accounted for around 34%, while speeding represented just under 30%, confirming both as the most common contributory factors to road deaths.
Although it’s worth noting that some fatal crashes may involve both behaviors, even if we consider that inevitable overlap, both speeding and alcohol impairment clearly outweigh other fatality-causing factors.
Distracted driving accounted for 200 California road deaths, about 5% of the state’s total. That means a driver was nearly six times as likely to die in a speeding-related crash and nearly seven times as likely in an alcohol-related crash as in a collision caused solely by distraction.
The data pertaining to California’s three main fatal crash factors is clear. And targeting all three (with a particular focus on speeding and drunk driving) through campaigns and enforcement would likely have a significant effect on the state’s traffic fatalities.
Let’s focus a little more closely on speeding as a fatality factor.
Speeding as a Significantly Dangerous Road Behavior
In 2024, speeding contributed to about 29.4% of all fatalities (close to one in three road crash deaths). Notably, speeding-related deaths didn’t precisely mirror overall crash fatality patterns. While all combined traffic deaths peaked in August and September, speeding fatalities were highest in November (118) and May (115), with October (101) also among the highest. (March featured the fewest: 72.)
Speeding’s share of each month’s road death toll confirms an even sharper contrast. In May, 115 of 299 fatalities (38.5%) involved speeding, the highest monthly share.
November followed with 118 of 338 road fatalities (34.9%). To compare, speeding accounted for just 87 of August’s 351 deaths (24.8%) and 88 of September’s 357 fatalities (24.6%), the year’s lowest shares.
So, although late summer produces the most deaths overall, speeding accounts for a disproportionately large share of fatalities in both May and November. Whereas the high death tolls in August and September would seem to be more heavily influenced by impaired driving, distracted driving, and overall traffic volume.
Quarterly data reinforces this finding, with speeding fatalities highest in Q4 (315 deaths) and Q2 (305), compared with Q3 (267) and Q1 (252). That’s almost the inverse of the overall fatality trend (which Q3 dominates), confirming that speeding’s impact fluctuates irrespective of California’s broader traffic death pattern.
On California’s roads, an even bigger fatality factor than speeding is drunk driving.
Drunk Driving: California’s Deadliest Driving Behavior
If we use the legal threshold of BAC .08+ to define the point beyond which a driver is drunk, in 2024, California recorded 1,311 fatalities that involved an intoxicated driver.
That means drunk driving was a factor in 33.8% of the state’s traffic deaths, more than one in three: a significantly bigger share than the 29.4% attributed to speeding, and clear confirmation that alcohol impairment is the key factor regarding California’s road deaths.
Unlike in the case of speeding, regarding which the worst months (November and May) diverged from overall fatality peak patterns, drunk-driving deaths closely followed the broader summer surge. September featured the most alcohol-related road fatalities (126), followed by June (125) and August (119); May and November both featured 115, while February was subject to the fewest (90).
The monthly percentages tell an even more emphatic story. June featured the highest share of alcohol-related crash deaths (39%), followed by May (38%) and April (36%). December featured the lowest share (28%), with February and October both recording a 31% share.
The difference between the highest and lowest monthly shares is notable. While nearly four in 10 deaths in June involved a legally intoxicated driver, in December the share was one in four.
Quarterly data reinforces the suggestion that drunk driving is a warm-weather problem. Q2 and Q3 tied for the highest number of fatalities (354), while Q1 saw just 292. Unlike in the case of speeding (which showed sharper spikes in spring and late fall), drunk driving builds from spring through summer. It remains elevated through early fall, aligning with high rates of social drinking, summer holidays, and warm-weather gatherings.
The severity of impairment in many fatal crashes is also a notable factor. Of the 1,311 fatalities that involved a driver at BAC .08+, 912 involved a BAC of .15 or higher, which is nearly twice the legal limit.
That means around 70% of California’s drunk-driving deaths involved extreme levels of intoxication as opposed to a driver barely over the legal threshold. This finding strengthens the case for enforcement and public messaging that specifically targets drivers who consistently drink heavily before getting behind the wheel.
Overall, speeding and alcohol data suggest two distinct behavioral patterns. The first is that speeding spikes around specific travel periods like Memorial Day and Thanksgiving, suggesting links to trip timing and urgency. By contrast, drunk driving levels rise steadily during warmer months and remain elevated into early fall, pointing toward seasonal socializing and drinking patterns.
A third key factor (albeit less significant in terms of the number of fatal crashes) is distracted driving.
Distracted Drivers: a Dangerous Road Factor
In 2024, distracted driving accounted for 200 of California’s 3,876 traffic fatalities, just over 5% of all road deaths. Unlike in the case of speeding or drunk driving, its annual share remained relatively steady rather than spiking at different yearly points; that said, monthly data still reveals some meaningful variation.
September was the deadliest month for distracted driving, featuring 25 deaths (7% of monthly fatalities), the highest rate in the dataset. March and May followed (20 deaths each, representing 6.21% and 6.69% of their respective totals). October (5.33%) and July (5.44%) also featured above-average rates, suggesting a broader late-spring-to-early-fall pattern.
At the other end of the spectrum, November featured just 11 distraction-related deaths (3.25%), the lowest monthly rate. January and June were also low (12 deaths, 4.14% and 3.80%). The 3.75-percentage-point gap between September and November clearly shows that distraction risk does vary, despite its steady annual baseline.
September is notable because it featured California’s highest overall fatality count (357 deaths). The elevated distracted-driving share (7%, 25 deaths) means the increase was not simply a matter of more traffic proportionally raising every category. A notably larger portion of September’s deaths were due to distracted driving.
The rise between March and September may reflect seasonal driving behavior (including extra road trips, longer daylight hours, and back-to-school traffic), all of which create more opportunities to multitask. The autumn and winter decline (especially November’s low) may reflect shorter days, less non-essential travel, and more cautious driving in precarious or less clear conditions.
Even during low-figure periods, distracted driving accounted for 3.25% of monthly fatalities. Clearly, it represents a persistent danger factor in all of California’s counties, including those that featured the highest fatality numbers in the state.
Top 10 California Road Fatality Counties
In 2024, just 10 of California’s 58 counties represented nearly 69% of state traffic fatalities, meaning county-level data is a key means of pinpointing the state’s most dangerous roads.
Los Angeles County led by a significant margin: its 744 fatalities were nearly twice the total recorded by the second-ranked county (San Bernardino, with 345 deaths). Dense freeway traffic, heavy commuter traffic, and ongoing pedestrian-safety issues contribute to its high numbers.
Third-placed San Diego recorded 298 fatalities, while Riverside logged 279. Combined, the counties represent a Southern California traffic hub subject to extensive and complex freeway networks and rapid population growth, particularly in the Inland Empire.
Kern and Orange counties tied in fifth place with 190 fatalities. The equal fatality count doesn’t mean the counties are similar: Kern features high-speed rural highways, whereas in Orange County the norm is dense suburban interchanges.
Fresno (167), Sacramento (155), and San Joaquin (143) represent the Central Valley’s contribution, which is shaped by long highways, considerable agricultural traffic, and infrastructure that in some places may need an update. Alameda County (104 fatalities) was the only Bay Area county in the top 10, proving that even a comparatively wealthy, well-resourced region can be vulnerable.
California’s varied range of especially dangerous counties features a combination of dense urban corridors, sprawling suburbs, and rural highways. And this emphasizes the fact that the state’s traffic safety problems are not limited to a specific road type, region, or income level.
But when it comes to dangerous times of day, that’s easier to specify.
California’s Deadliest Driving Window
In 2024, California’s deadliest hours were 8–8:59 p.m. and 9-9:59 pm (both featured 242 fatalities apiece). Combined, they represented about 12.7% of the state’s traffic deaths. Risk remained high in the immediate aftermath: 10–10:59 p.m. featured 234 deaths; 11-11:59 pm featured 232; and midnight-12:59 am featured 219.
That means the five deadliest hours of the California day formed a nearly continuous stretch between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m.
(If we expand the window to 6 p.m.-1 a.m., the seven combined hours accounted for 1,581 deaths, roughly 41.6% of all traffic fatalities, despite covering less than a third of the day.)
The safest hours were 8–8:59 a.m. and 10-10:59 am (77 deaths in both cases), followed by 9-9:59 am (79). That means that a driver was more than three times as likely to die in a crash during the 9–9:59 p.m. hour as they were during the 9 a.m.-9:59 a.m. hour. The evening spike reached its peak in September, which recorded the highest combined 8–10 p.m. number of fatalities.
Distracted driving fatalities followed a different hourly pattern. The deadliest hour for distracted drivers was 11–11:59 p.m. (19 deaths), followed by 7-7:59 pm (18) and 6-6:59 pm (15). This tells us that distraction becomes a bigger problem later at night, potentially exacerbated by fatigue and failing visibility.
The overall pattern is clear: California’s roads are most dangerous from the evening commute to late at night (roughly 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.).
But which drivers face the highest level of threat on California’s roads?
The Drivers Most Involved in Fatal Crashes in California
According to 2024 crash figures, the age groups of the drivers most at risk of a fatal crash is one of the clearest disparities on California’s roads. 787 drivers (and passengers) aged 25-34 died, a 20.31% share, the largest of any age group. 35-44 year-olds followed (680, 17.54%): the two working-age groups combined represented 37.86% of all fatalities, over one in three.
Under-16s accounted for 115 deaths (2.97%), the smallest recorded age-group numbers (apart from ‘Unknown’). Those aged 16-24 accounted for 672 deaths (17.34%), while those aged 65 and older suffered 621 fatalities (16.03%). For those last two groups, the similar totals reflect very different risk profiles: inexperienced and risk-taking younger drivers and older drivers subject to slower reaction times and physical fragility.
In terms of age disparities across different months, September (the peak month overall) was a peak or near-peak month for several groups, including for those aged 45-54 (49 deaths), 55-64 (58, compared to a monthly average of around 41). For those in the 65-74 and 75+ bracket, September represented their second-highest annual totals. The 25-34 group peaked in August (93 deaths), while the 35-44 group peaked in November (76).
The 16-20 group peaked in September (34 deaths), though only by one fatality: June (33) also showed elevated numbers that reflected high rates of summer driving and the return-to-school period. Overall, though, September was the key risk month across nearly every demographic group.
The data also reveals a significant gender imbalance. Male fatalities (2,871, 74.11%) far outweighed female fatalities (1,003, 25.89%). Male deaths closely followed the general seasonal pattern, peaking in September (269). Female fatalities peaked in January and October (91 each), just ahead of April (90).
Those peaks suggest the seasonal and behavioral factors behind female fatalities may significantly differ from those driving male fatalities.
Hit-and-Run Incidents and Pedestrian Deaths in California
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 7,148 pedestrians were killed by U.S. drivers in 2024. In California, the number was 1,090, which means about one in seven of the country’s pedestrians were killed in the state.
Hit-and-run crashes are a big part of that number. In 2024, the NHTSA logged 2,758 hit-and-run fatalities across the U.S., more than seven deaths a day. Pedestrians are disproportionately at risk: hit-and-runs account for roughly one in four pedestrian deaths. And in fatal hit-and-run pedestrian crashes, the vehicle at fault fled the scene in 94% of cases.
If we apply those national rates to California’s 1,090 pedestrian deaths, it seems likely that hundreds of the state’s fatal hit-and-run collisions involved pedestrians (although California’s final 2024 hit-and-run figures aren’t yet available).
California Danger: Predictable and Preventable
California’s 3,876 recorded 2024 traffic deaths were subject to clear seasonal, behavioral, geographic, and demographic patterns. Alcohol impairment (about 34%) and speeding (about 29%) were the leading contributory factors, with distraction a factor in 5% of cases.
Fatalities peaked in late summer (the 6 p.m.-1 a.m. period was the key danger window), with the highest death counts among working-age adults, men, and a small number of counties (led by Los Angeles). Pedestrians were also shown to be at severe risk.
Ultimately, the data confirms that California’s traffic death crisis is predictable and can be attributed to specific behaviors, seasons, hours, locations, and demographic groups. So there are clear ways to save lives, with targeted interventions focused on impaired driving, speeding, and nighttime road risk particularly vital.
