ABOUT THE ACCIDENT
On June 28, the residents of Vine Street in San Jose woke up in the early hours of the morning to find their parked cars wrecked on top of their lawns. Police had to close off the road for four hours following the incident.
Two people suffered injuries and one person was arrested for a chain reaction crash that police say involved at least six motor vehicles.
Firefighters, police, and paramedics all responded to the accident scene on Vine Street at Edwards Avenue near downtown San Jose. The wreck occurred just before 1 a.m.
One driver who was in a black Lexus had to be cut from his vehicle by first responders and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the driver of a truck was responsible for causing the chain reaction accident. Officers said the driver of the truck and two passengers jumped out of the vehicle and took off running. However, police were eventually able to catch the driver and one of the fleeing passengers.
The passenger the officers captured was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck was taken to jail and charged with hit and run. In total, at least six vehicles were damaged in the accident, including four cars that were parked along the street.
Isaac Andrade, one of the accident victims, said, “It was pretty bad and very irresponsible. Plus they ran, so that didn’t make it OK.”
After the sun came up, Andrade was able to get a better look at his 2015 Dodge Challenger. I’m pretty sure it’s totaled, according to the tow truck driver,” he said.
Several people living on the street are still dealing with the aftermath of the accident. When Bryan Bravo woke up to the sounds of the crash, he thought he “was still dreaming.” Bravo’s gate and fence in the front yard was destroyed by the truck, along with his neighbor’s yard. His mom’s car was parked across the street and was also damaged in the collision.
When Bravo found out the driver tried to flee the scene of the accident, he said, “If you’re going to do something like that, you might as well stay, face the consequences, not actually leave. Man up to it, you know, but I mean it is what it is. Sometimes people don’t think.”
Police don’t think that drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.
