Why Blackout Wednesday Is One of the Most Dangerous Nights to Drive
Blackout Wednesday earns its reputation for a reason: it combines high alcohol consumption with high traffic volume at an unusual hour. Unlike New Year’s Eve, where most people expect the roads to be dangerous and plan accordingly, Blackout Wednesday catches many drivers off guard.
The night draws a disproportionate number of young adults who are returning home for the holiday and reconnecting with friends. Many bars and restaurants report their highest sales of the year on this night.
The result is a significant spike in impaired drivers on the road in the late evening and early morning hours, often on highways and routes that are already busy with Thanksgiving travel.
How to Stay Safe on Blackout Wednesday If You’re Going Out
If you’re planning to go out on Blackout Wednesday, a few decisions made before you leave the house can keep you and everyone else safer.
- Arrange your ride before you drink: The time to book a rideshare or designate a driver is before the night starts, not after. Waiting until you need one means competing with everyone else who had the same idea, and making that decision after drinking means your judgment is already compromised.
- Set a hard limit on how long you’ll stay out: The later the night goes, the more impaired drivers are on the road. Leaving earlier isn’t just safer for you; it puts you on the road before the highest-risk window.
- Stay where you are if you need to: If your plans change and you find yourself without a safe way home, staying put is always the right call. A late night is inconvenient. A crash is not.
- Keep your phone charged: A dead phone on a night when you might need a rideshare, need to call someone, or need to contact emergency services is a preventable problem.
These aren’t complicated steps, but they’re the ones that matter. Omega Law Group sees the results of Blackout Wednesday crashes every year, and most of them were preventable.
How to Stay Safe on Blackout Wednesday If You’re Driving Sober
Choosing not to drink doesn’t eliminate your risk on Blackout Wednesday. Impaired drivers are unpredictable, and even a careful, sober driver can find themselves in a dangerous situation.
Adjust Your Timing
If you can avoid driving during the highest-risk window, do. The hours between 11pm and 3am on Blackout Wednesday see the heaviest concentration of impaired drivers. If your plans allow for it, being off the road during those hours reduces your exposure significantly.
Increase Your Following Distance
Impaired drivers brake late, drift between lanes, and make sudden, unpredictable movements. Giving yourself more space than usual means more time to react if the car ahead of you does something unexpected.
Watch for the Signs of an Impaired Driver
Weaving between lanes, inconsistent speed, unusually slow driving, and delayed reactions at traffic signals are all common signs of impairment. If you spot a driver behaving erratically, increase your distance, avoid overtaking them, and pull over safely to report them if the behavior is severe.
Avoid Distractions
Your reaction time needs to be at its sharpest on a night like this. Phones, food, and anything else that pulls your attention away from the road should be put aside before you start driving.
What to Do If You’re Involved in a Crash on Blackout Wednesday
Call 911 right away. If an impaired driver caused the crash, a police report documenting that is important evidence. Don’t move your vehicle unless it’s creating a safety hazard, and don’t engage with the other driver beyond exchanging insurance information.
Seek medical attention even if you feel okay. Adrenaline can mask pain, and injuries like concussions and soft tissue damage often don’t present fully until hours or days after a crash. A prompt medical record ties your injuries directly to the collision.
Document everything you can. Photos of the vehicles, the scene, and any visible injuries are evidence that can’t be recreated later. If there were witnesses, get their contact information before they leave. The more you document at the scene, the stronger your position. Omega Law Group Accident & Injury Attorneys can take it from there.
Your Legal Options After a Holiday Crash
Texas law allows injury victims to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and property damage. In cases involving a drunk driver, additional damages may be available depending on the circumstances.
