The busiest day to drive during Christmas varies by year and route, so there is no single date that is always the worst for traffic. The days leading up to December 25 can bring heavy Christmas traffic, especially when holiday departures overlap with regular commuting.
Checking current traffic forecasts can help you choose when to leave and prepare for delays. If you are injured in a collision, a West Hollywood car accident lawyer from Omega Law Group Accident & Injury Attorneys can review what happened and explain your options for pursuing compensation.
Which Days Are Busiest for Driving Around Christmas?
The days before Christmas, including December 23 and the preceding weekend, are worth checking closely when planning your departure. The day of the week, local commuting patterns, and the timing of school and workplace closures can shift the busiest Christmas travel days from one year to the next. Christmas Eve is not consistently a peak traffic day.
Plan for return-trip traffic as well. Traffic after Christmas can build as travelers head home, while trips extending through New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day can spread that congestion across several days. Airport pickups, last-minute shopping, and holiday events can add local traffic even outside major departure periods.
Treat annual Christmas traffic predictions as estimates. A forecast for a major highway may not reflect conditions on your local roads or along your entire route. National travel volume alone does not tell you which day will have the longest delays where you are driving.
What Time Should You Drive on the Busiest Christmas Travel Days?
There is no universally best time to drive during Christmas, but avoiding the overlap between holiday travel and commuter rush hour may help. Check the current forecast for your specific route before deciding when to leave, especially if you will pass through a major metropolitan area.
An earlier departure may help you avoid afternoon and evening congestion on the heaviest Christmas driving days. However, leaving before dawn is not a safer choice if it means driving without enough sleep or encountering poor visibility.
Christmas Day traffic may be lighter on some commuter routes, but roads near attractions and gatherings can still be busy. Choose a departure time that accounts for your alertness and weather conditions. For a longer journey, consider when you will reach busy highway interchanges as well as when you leave home.
How Can You Check Christmas Traffic Before Leaving?
Use current Christmas travel information rather than assuming last year’s traffic pattern will repeat. Check conditions while planning your trip and again shortly before departure.
- Review your state transportation agency’s road information or 511 service, where available, for closures, construction, and restrictions. In California, Caltrans QuickMap provides current highway conditions.
- Check navigation estimates for your route and possible alternatives before driving, including reported crashes and traffic delays.
- Read weather forecasts for the entire trip, including mountain passes or other areas with changing conditions.
- Look for current holiday travel forecasts from sources such as AAA and traffic analytics provider INRIX, paying attention to the year, dates, and regions they cover.
An alternate route is not automatically safer because it looks faster. Consider road conditions, lighting, and your familiarity with the area before leaving a major highway.
Omega Law Group encourages drivers to prioritize safety over arrival times. Have a passenger check traffic updates or pull over somewhere safe rather than handling your phone while driving.
Why Can Heavy Holiday Traffic Increase Crash Risks?
Christmas road congestion causes frequent speed changes and leaves less room to respond when drivers follow too closely. Stop-and-go traffic, sudden braking, rushed lane changes, and unexpected exits can lead to rear-end or sideswipe collisions when drivers do not allow enough space.
Holiday schedules can also contribute to fatigue and distraction. A driver checking directions, responding to messages, or rushing to arrive on time may miss a developing hazard. Alcohol-impaired driving creates an additional danger, while rain, snow, or ice can reduce traction and make stopping more difficult.
Busy roads do not excuse unsafe driving. You still need to adjust your speed and following distance based on traffic, visibility, and weather, even if it delays your arrival.
How Can You Make Your Christmas Drive Safer?
Allow extra travel time when driving during the busiest days of Christmas so delays do not create pressure to speed or weave through traffic. Set your route before moving, keep your attention on the road, and let a passenger handle navigation when possible.
Before and during your trip:
- Allow time for fuel stops, rest breaks, and unexpected road closures.
- Leave extra following distance when traffic slows or conditions worsen.
- Avoid abrupt lane changes, and take a break somewhere safe if you become tired or frustrated.
- Check your tires, lights, and windshield wipers before a long drive.
- Carry supplies appropriate for winter weather along your route.
- Arrange a sober ride before drinking alcohol.
- Make sure everyone wears a seat belt, and children use an appropriate car seat or booster seat.
If weather makes travel unsafe, postponing the trip may be a better option than trying to meet a holiday schedule.

What Should You Do After a Christmas Car Accident?
After a Christmas car accident, focus first on immediate safety and medical needs. If anyone is injured or there is an immediate danger, call emergency services and follow their instructions.
- Move to a safer location if you can do so safely and local law permits it.
- Exchange driver, contact, and insurance information with the other motorists involved.
- Photograph vehicle damage, road conditions, and the scene when it is safe to do so.
- Obtain witness contact information and ask how to access any police report.
- Seek medical evaluation for injuries or symptoms and keep your treatment records.
- Notify your insurer as required by your policy and preserve crash-related communications, medical bills, and repair estimates.
Heavy holiday traffic alone does not establish who caused the crash. Photographs, witness statements, and available dashcam footage may help clarify what happened. Omega Law Group can review this evidence, explain how fault may affect your claim, and identify filing and notice deadlines.
